Equipment and upgrading
Learn the equipment slots and tiers, and how to upgrade gear from +0 to +9 at the blacksmith, smelt ore and sell what you gather.
Gear is where most of your strength comes from. You buy it from the village merchants, earn it from quests, and then upgrade it at the blacksmith, Fabbro.
Equipment slots
Open the bag (I). The Equipment panel on the left has ten slots:
| Slot | How many |
|---|---|
| Weapon | 1 (it also decides your job) |
| Helm | 1 |
| Armor | 1 |
| Shoes | 1 |
| Bracelet | 2 |
| Ring | 2 |
| Necklace | 1 |
| Earrings | 1 |
Hover over any item for its numbers. Click or right-click an item in the bag to equip it. Click a worn item to take it off. You can't take off your weapon: equip another weapon instead, and your job changes with it (see Combat and skills).
When you browse a merchant's wares, items show how much attack and defence they add or remove compared with what you wear now.
Tiers
Every item has one of five tiers, shown by its name colour. Higher tiers have bigger numbers, cost more and are dearer to upgrade.
| Tier | Colour | Usual shop price |
|---|---|---|
| Common | White | 90,000 copper |
| Uncommon | Green | 20 silver |
| Rare | Blue | 150 silver |
| Epic | Purple | 900 silver |
| Legendary | Gold | 4,000 silver |
100,000 copper make 1 silver. Some items, such as potions and tools, have prices of their own. Every item is listed on the items page.
The bag starts with 90 slots. Expand +18 at the bottom of the bag adds 18 slots at a time, up to 180. The first expansion costs 100 silver, and each one after costs that much more than the last.
Upgrading at the blacksmith
Fabbro Bram in Embervale and Fabbro Quill in the Silt Outpost upgrade gear.
- Talk to the blacksmith and press Open the forge.
- Pick a piece of gear from the grid. Worn gear and gear in the bag both appear.
- Read the success chance, the coin cost and the materials needed.
- Press Attempt upgrade.
Each upgrade level makes the item's attack, magic, defence, health and mana 8% stronger. A +9 item has 72% bigger numbers than the same item at +0. The stat bonuses on accessories (STR, DEX and so on) don't grow.
+9 is the ceiling. The coins and materials are spent whether the attempt works or not.
What happens on failure
A failed upgrade drops the item one rank: a +5 that fails becomes +4. The item is never destroyed, and +0 can't fall lower. There are no protection items: Soul Stones and Scrolls of Clarity are for skills, not gear.
Success chance and coin cost
Costs depend on the item's tier.
| Upgrade | Success | Common | Uncommon | Rare | Epic | Legendary |

Where some of the key materials come from:
- Enchanted Quartz: every curse stone and Rotmaw drop it; Scalebound, Corrupted Mages and Crimson Warlocks sometimes.
- Dragon Scale: Scalebound, Flame Skulls, and curse stones.
- Wolf Fur: Grey Wolfkin, Knoll Foxes and Vale Stags in the first maps.
- Orc Tooth and Orc Tooth+: Orc Raiders on the meadow plateau.
Elite monsters drop materials more often and in larger numbers. The bestiary lists every monster's drops. You can also buy materials from other players (see Trading and the market).
The forge keeps a short history of your last attempts under the upgrade panel.
Mining and smelting
Buy a Miner's Pickaxe (1 silver 20,000 copper) from a general trader and keep it in your bag. Stand at an ore rock and press F to mine one or two ore.
At the blacksmith, Smelt ore turns every three ore of a kind into one ingot. Sell ingots sells them all at the forge:
| Ore | Ingot | Forge pays |
|---|---|---|
| Iron Ore | Iron Ingot | 60,000 copper |
| Copper Ore | Copper Ingot | 90,000 copper |
| Gold Ore | Gold Ingot | 2 silver 40,000 copper |
Some monsters drop ore too: Road Bandits and Pit Ghouls drop iron, Shelf Borers copper, Stone Golems gold.
Fishing
Buy a Fishing Rod (90,000 copper) and press F at the water's edge. Each water holds its own fish, and one catch in twenty is a crowned king worth six ordinary fish. General traders buy your whole catch with Sell fish.
Selling to merchants
Every merchant has a Sell from bag list. A merchant pays 35% of an item's price for each piece, and 15% more for each upgrade level. Monster materials and curse crystals are worth far more to other players than to merchants.
